The sun and the fun of summer can be extremely hard on hair extensions! It is of utmost importance that you take the proper precautions to keep your investment in the best of condition all summer long. Chlorine and salt water can dry the hair out, making tangles and fading the color of the hair significantly. Not only can water damage the hair, but SUNSCREEN and the sun itself can also discolor extensions! Below is a list of tips I have compiled to keep your wefts in tip top shape (and yes, you can still live your best summer life!)

  1. Mineral Sunscreen ONLY - It is extremely important if you wear extensions that you only use mineral sunscreen, look out for the ingredient "Avobenzene" in your spf, this means it is unsafe to use! What will happen if you do use chemicsal sunscreen? Lighter colored hair will start to turn pink/peach/orange anywhere that sunscreen has touched (has your hair touched your shoulders, neck, back , face, hands while covered in sunscreen?) We can color correct the wefts, but only to a certain extent! In some cases we have to replace the hair, so beware!

  2. Wet hair with regular water before swimming - Think of the hair as a sponge, if you put a dry sponge in a pool it will soak up allll that chlorinated water. But, if you wet the sponge with regular water first, it is less likely to absorb anymore because it is already full! This step is easy to overlook and skip, but makes a huge impact!

  3. Apply leave-in conditioner or a hair mask - After wetting the hair, it is important to apply a hydrating product! This will coat the hair in an additional layer of protection, making it harder to absorb any more of the salt/chlorine you are about to enter. Bonus, you will have a way easier time later when you go to wash your hair as it will help prevent tangles as well!

  4. Put hair in bubble braids or braid a ponytail - Final step! Put all those mermaid locks into a secure ponytail, fron here you can choose to do bubble braids or a tight braid all the way down. Make sure to tie the braid at the top AND bottom for the most secure style. Keeping the hair in either of these styles will prevent tangles and keep in the moisture from the hair mask! Do not ever jump in the water with your hair in a messy bun!!! You will regret it when you have a huge mess to detangle later!

  5. Wash the hair as soon as you can after swimming - After a day full of fun in the sun, you do not want to just go to sleep with all that salt/chlorine in the hair! Give your hair some TLC that evening with a nice shampoo and deep conditioner, and then dry your hair fully before going to sleep!

  6. Don't forget to HAVE FUN and enjoy yourself!
